The idea behind WikiWoods

Background

Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing on a global level. To minimize the consequences for the climate, and for humans and ecosystems, we have to start acting now. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) appeals to nations to save energy, to use energy more efficiently and to support forested areas. Forestation worldwide helps to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and decrease the global greenhouse effect. The enlargement of forests is one possible way to help the climate. One planted tree can process around 6 kg of carbon dioxide annually. If you count a forest with 1000 trees, this amounts to about 6 tons carbon dioxide per year. This is the equivalent of a flight from Berlin to Hong Kong.

Become active: plant trees with volunteers

WikiWoods is an initiative getting involved in the process of helping forests and woods to grow and flourish in a natural way - worldwide. The use of an internet platform similar to the Wikipedia platform helps to make it possible for volunteers, experts and sponsors to meet on the web and work together on local projects. Through the platform, everyone who wishes can get involved in climate defense, get active on a local level and contribute to the global protection of environment. This way CO2 emissions are reduced by a growing number of trees, biodiversity is supported, environmental awareness is increased and also the local climate is influenced in a positive way.

The protection

We are interested in forests for the long-term. Therefore we search for areas which are part of a nature reserve or are under similar protection. At the same time, we would like the forest to be used by the people. The forest is considered as a common, public good - with only one sanction for humans: the forest has to be cared for! Community uses of the area could include local recreation for the population and means of bringing people closer to nature. There is also the possibility for green tourism, animal watching or gentle forestry use. In accomplishing this objective, the platform should also serve as a contact medium for experts in forestry issues (foresters, biologists, experienced environmental groups, etc.) with those who initiate or participate in the projects. We want to plant (tree) species of that region (that means that regional and sustainable wood-ecosystems can be initiated) and only those that reach a long time effect to capture carbon. At the same time, the platform provides information of a general nature and offers a forum for these issues.
