Fruit trees for Berlin

WikiWoods started with the campaigne “Fruit trees for Berlin”! The main objectives are:

  • Strenghten the local economy
  • Indepence from the global food transport system
  • Avoidance of fruit transports and thus reduction in CO2 emissions

On May the 15th we planted our first trees in YAAM!

WikiWoods: plant the world's biggest forest

WikiWoods is an initiative getting involved into the process of helping forests and woods to grow and flourish in a natural way - worldwide. The use of an internet platform similar to the Wikipedia platform helps to make it possible for volunteers, experts and sponsors to meet on the web and work together on a local area conduct forest-projects. Through the platform everyone who wants to can get involved into climate protection, get active on a local level and contribute so to the global protection of climate. This way CO2 is being bound by a growing number of trees, biodiversity is supported, awareness for the forest can build up and also the local climate is influenced in a positive way.

Background

Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing on a global level. To minimize the consequences for the climate, and for humans and ecosystems, we have to start acting now. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) appeals to nations to save energy, to use energy more efficiently and to support forested areas. Forestation worldwide helps to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and decrease the global greenhouse effect. The enlargement of forests is one possible way to help the climate. One planted tree can process around 6 kg of carbon dioxide annually. If you count a forest with 1000 trees, this amounts to about 6 tons carbon dioxide per year. This is the equivalent of a flight from Berlin to Hong Kong.

Become active: plant trees with volunteers
